Data Centers Focus on Green IT, but Many Neglect Metrics
Gent, Belgium 23 September 2009 - Gartner issued a report (Gartner ID: G00169058) that says that data center and IT managers focus on green IT, despite the economic downturn. However, many do not implement measurements and monitoring, which are essential for the adoption of new technologies and government policies.
This research analyzes the results of an interactive poll conducted at a green IT webinar in April 2009. Data center managers and IT managers can learn how some organizations are addressing energy-related and green IT issues from the data presented in this research.
Key Findings
Data center and IT managers are not paying sufficient attention to the process of measuring, monitoring and modeling energy use in data centers. Unless users start to create accurate dashboards, they will not be able to reduce energy costs and meet compliance requirements.
Virtualization is the main mechanism through which data center and IT managers are lowering their data center energy costs.
More than 60% of data centers will face space and energy constraints in the next 18 months.
